Hows things over at the brand new Wind? Over here at the old old Talitha everythings great. A lot different though. Naturally things in general are smaller, and simpler. For instance we do not have any temperature regulation. No external pumps, well a few but many. Pre-lub pump, hydraulics, SW pumps, FW pumps. Touring the engine is done in a couple of minutes. We have one water tight door in engine, two emergency exits. Every third day/nite I am on stand-by, but there are only a couple of hundred alarm points and very few go off ever. Only bad thing about being on watch is that you can not go out/drink/beach/cycle/whatever. At the moment we stop 1530 every day and only fiive days a week (four this week for me, cause I got thursday off). So I list some of the advantages and disadvantages.
Pros
-Only work until 1530.
-Dont work weekends unless you're on watch.
-Meaningsfull work, no more ECR watch - alarm resetting
-More responsibility, especially when I am Chief.
-Will gain usefull experience from here.
-Unlimited free Internet 24 hours, seven days a week.
-Clothes come back clean from laundry same day you send them.
-Loads of things to do at free time since it is a busy crowded and scenic location, pary, drink, sports, barbecue, bars, restaurants + possible to borrow toys from yacht like seacayaks etc.
-No need to put on uniform just to get a descent meal. Actually the food here is probably better than in any of the restaurants on the Pearl and I can eat in my working clothes.
-No need for boiler suite and safety shoes in engine, most of the time we walk barefoot with shorts and T-shirts.
-Very liberal alcohol policy. As long as you can do your work you can be piss drunk every nite. Have to drink a little less if you are on watch though.
-Free alcohol (beer, wine and some booze) onboard.
-Free toothpaste, razer blades, razer gel, schampoo, bug spray, sun tanning lotion, soap, chocolate, peanuts what fucking ever you need and dont need.
-Only english spoken, never have to listen to Filippino mgnonginom bhgamadgn.
-Very nice looking ship with a history.
-Long portstays, more relaxed.
-Bonus and share of tips when on charter.
-Good looking girls onboard and ashore.
-Very cheap alcohol ahsore at the local bars, get four drinks for US$10, just a couple of minutes from the yacht.
-Very nice pizza ashore. Close.
-Amazingly big bathroom. No more fighting with the shower curtain or fludding the floor. Marble.
Cons
-Start already 0700 in the morning.
-Salery/month less the Pearl when not on charter.
-Have to share cabin with 3rd Eng/Electrician two months, 3rd month as Chief Eng, you get your own.
-Will get no cabin cleaning as 2nd, and only once a week as Chief Eng.
-Since everyone has weekends off, we have to warm up pre-prepared food during the weekends.
-Captain's a dick head. Seems he is everything and everyone else is nothing.
-Electrician don't seem to be very useful, he is an electronic and deals mostly with entertainment and such. Not so good in case of high voltage failure.
-I am going to be in charge of some things I have absolutely no idea about how they work (or how to fix them if they break).
Well, cannot think about anythig else at the moment. Looks like there are more Pros than Cons at the moment.
