TOP SECRET Pre - Launch The Bosuns Daily Small boat Checklist has been completed for small boats
and davits,
The boat is to be lowered to the embarkation area and all equipment required
for the task loaded,
During the loading of equipment all personnel entering the boat are to be wearing the
correct PPE in accordance with the PPE Matrix and any known risks not covered by
the matrix,
A radio, rGPS and electrical systems check is to be performed,
A tool box meeting (TBM) is to be held on the bridge and the Small Boat PTW
issued with all personnel involved in the operation in attendance,
A radio TBM is to be held between the seismic vessel and any vessel used to
support the operation.
Launch Whilst the boat is at the embarkation area with persons onboard it and during
the launch the deck crew are to remain at station and be prepared to activate
the ‘MOB Gun Stop’ alarm button should an incident occur.
Self Tension Devices fitted to davits are to be used for every launch.
The coxswain and crew are to ensure that any cargo and/or passengers are
loaded so that the trim of the boat is maintained,
o During the launch of a FRB the ‘Engine Kill Cord’ is not to be
connected to the coxswain until the boat is clear of the deflector,
All cargo is to be secured and passengers and crew are to have firm hand
grips,
Passengers are to remain seated at all times
The davit operator and vessels’ painter handler are to ensure they have clear
sight of the coxswain and/or the hook man at all times and are to monitor radio
communications with the boat, davit area and bridge,
The coxswain when ready for launch shall request permission from the Master,
When permission is granted the coxswain or hook man is to signal the davit
operator to lower the boat to approximately 2 meters above sea level and stop,
The Coxswain is to start the boats engines and carryout systems checks on
the controls,
The Coxswain is to inform the Hook Handler to release the safety pin and arm
the Henriksen hook mechanism,
The hook handler is to confirm that the safety pin is removed and the hook
armed,
The coxswain or hook man then requests the davit operator to lower the boat
to sea,
The hook handler confirms the release of the lifting ring from the hook to the
coxswain,
o If the lifting ring fails to disengage from the hook, the hook
mechanism is to be rearmed and the boat brought back onboard
Immediately following the release of the lifting ring the hook is to be rearmed,
the safety pin fitted and the propulsion system checked,
The coxswain then maneuverers the boat forward and approximately 2 meters
away from the vessel side whilst maintaining a parallel course,
The painter handler releases the painter and confirms that the line is free of
the boat,
o The painter line is to be thrown clear of the bow of the boat to
prevent snagging
The coxswain then maneuverers the boat away from the vessel,
If the antennas have been lowered then immediately following departure and
when outside of the deflectors the antenna system of the workboat is to be
raised
The vessels davit operator and painter handler remain at their station until the
boat is clear of the deflector.
Recovery On approach to the vessel for recovery the coxswain must stay on a parallel
course with the vessel (outside of the deflector),
o On the approach of the FRB the ‘Engine Kill Cord’ is to be
disconnected from the coxswain prior to entering area between
the deflector and the vessel,
The boat crew inspect the painter line and Henriksen hook to ensure they are
ready,
Self Tension Devices fitted to davits are to be used for all recoverys.
Prior to the final approach consideration should be made to lower the antenna
system of the workboat
The coxswain requests the OOW for permission to come alongside for
recovery,
The OOW informs the launch crew to prepare the davit and painter line,
When the davit and painter line are prepared the Master gives permission to
the small boat to approach for recovery,
The boat maneuvers to approximately 5 - 10 meters away and parallel to the
vessel,
The coxswain and crew inspect the recovery area for any potential hazards
and ensure that any passengers are seated and any cargo is secured,
The boat crew take up their positions for recovery and the coxswain
maneuverers the boat alongside,
The vessels’ deck crew lower the painter line,
The painter handler connects the line and ensures that it is not snagged on
any part of the boat and informs the coxswain,
The coxswains reduces speed to take the painter under tension whilst
maintaining propulsion,
The davit wire and ring are lowered and the lifting ring placed into the
Henriksen hook,
o Caution: The Hook Handler shall maintain 3 points of contact with the
boat whilst waiting for the Hook to be lowered. Avoid over reaching for
the hook rope and allow it to be lowered to the correct position
The hook handler informs the coxswain that the hook and ring are connected
and signals to the davit operator to lift,
The davit operator raises the boat,
The coxswain shuts down the engine and propulsion system during recovery,
The boat is stopped at the embarkation area and any cargo or personal are
disembarked,
Immediately following the final recovery all unnecessary equipment is to be
unloaded and any defects are to be logged in the PTW before it is closed.
