1. PURPOSE
To act as navigation officer and navigational watch keeper, to assist in the safe and efficient carriage of cargoes and to be responsible for upkeep of lifesaving and safety equipment.

3. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Navigational routing planning.
• Assisting Chief Mate with operational planning.
• To keep life-saving appliances and fire-fighting equipment in a constant state of readiness and to effect and record regular inspections.
• To maintain weather monitoring equipment and to compile weather logs and data for submission to shore authorities.
• To support the Shipboard organisation.
• To deputise for the Chief Officer when necessary.
4. SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• To take charge of a navigational watch, a cargo watch and/or ship keeping duties as required by the Captain or his deputy.
• To ensure that the most recent additions of all navigation publications and charts are on board for the intended voyage and that the latter are corrected up-to-date.
• To control and maintain flags, shapes and visual and sound signalling equipment.
• To be responsible for the upkeep of all lifesaving appliances and fire fighting equipment and to update the Emergency Station Bill.
• To take charge of mooring/unmooring operations as required.
• To prepare a navigation ‘Passage Plan’.
• To co-ordinate in the upkeep of the Gyro Compass and repeaters, Course recorder, Weather Fax, Auto-Pilot, Log and other operational equipment as fitted.
• To assist with hold cleaning.
• To observe all statutory regulations with regard to pollution prevention.
• To carry out instructional duties as required.
• To assist the Chief Mate in the training of Junior Officers, Deck Cadets and/or ratings.
• To be responsible for the management of the ship's technical library.
• To be responsible for the control of films, videos etc., used for training.
• Other duties as required by the Master.
